Jacob's ladder refererences the biblical story of Jacob, who dreamt he saw angels ascending and descending a fiery ladder or stairway from heaven to earth. Genesis 28:10-22.
This sculpture is ladder like in its repeating structure. The nails however, are bent and gnarled with age and hammering. They remind us of the hand forged nails used to crucify Jesus and the suffering and pain he underwent on our behalf. The title Jacob's ladder, also refers the ugliness of death caused by drugs. Redemption through Christ being the final hope for redeption through a painful pathway of suffering and pain.
